Bipolar disorder has been the ride of a lifetime. I have been traveling with this mood disorder before I even knew about mental health. I was blessed with a large family and my older brother Tony was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder when he was discharged from the Army. He was 22  years old.

I experienced his many adventures of going in and out of VA hospitals and years on Lithium to manage his moods. I have seen his mania and his deep depressions. He was open about his mood swings and his lack of control over them. He was always entertaining and fun to be around. The violent side he kept to himself. I never knew how his lifestyle would largely impact my life.  He moved to Oregon when I was a young teen.

It wasn’t until I gave birth to my son Jackson that I saw the resemblance of irrational behavior. While I knew what I was seeing, it was challenging convincing those around me that my child had bipolar disorder.  Apparently, it’s a genetic disorder and in a large family, it shows up at earlier ages.

Bipolar disorder became my life

I learned everything I could.  Additionally, I read every book already printed on the topic. I always felt like something was missing in all those books. It was missing the human element, that vulnerability.  Plus, the amount of love that was needed to understand and parent a child.

I worked hard as a parent advocate for mental health.  Additionally, I went back to school to get a masters degree in mental health counseling. I wanted my experiences to help others as I knew I was given a gift of understanding. I knew I was blessed with the whole box of crayons.

Now I color every day in the full spectrum of emotions. I know that to feel deeply is a gift. I get the darkness and shades of grey. Plus, I get the brilliance of yellow and hope.
